The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max were announced on October 13, 2020. Along with the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini they’re Apple’s first 5G phones, but they offer even more in terms of specs and features.

Availability and price
The iPhone 12 Pro should start shipping on the 23rd October – and it’s available for pre-order now. The iPhone 12 Mini, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max will come along a little later.
You can pick up the iPhone 12 Pro for £999, costing £300 more than the original iPhone 12 model.
Design and display
The iPhone 12 Pro is larger than its iPhone 11 predecessor increasing from a 5.8-inch screen to 6.1 inches.
Externally, the phone look similar to the previous generation, the only difference being the curved side has been replaced by a flat edge, like some of the older iPhones. The new design uses premium materials, including a surgical steel band.
The iPhone 12 Pro comes in four colours:
- Silver
- Graphite
- Gold
- Pacific Blue
The rear of the phone is made of glass, like the iPhone 11, however new Ceramic Shield technology on the front ensures the screen is a lot more durable. Apple boasts a 4x better drop performance compared to previous iPhones.
Both new models are IP68-rated for dust and water resistance, just like last year’s iPhones. However, they can supposedly survive being submerged up to 6 meters deep for up to 30 minutes – which is more than the iPhone 11 range or most other phones.
Apple has improved the screens on the phones with Super Retina XDR, its latest display tech, for the best colour accuracy in an iPhone yet. The iPhone 12 Pro has double the number of pixels as the iPhone 11 and boasts a 1200-nits peak brightness, which should mean you’ll get a brighter display than on previous iPhones.

Camera
The iPhone 12 Pro has triple camera units, featuring a 12MP f/2.4 ultrawide camera, a 12MP f1/.6 wide angle camera and a 12MP f/2.0 telephoto camera. The zoom has been boosted from 3x optical to 4x optical while retaining its predecessors 52mm-approximating lens. And it offers 27% better low-light performance too, according to Apple.
Both the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max also have a new, fourth spot on their rear camera arrays: a LiDAR scanner.
Both models will be able to essentially see in the dark, which means that if you’re shooting in low-light conditions the LiDAR sensor will instantly recognise the subject and capture it straight away with Night Mode. This means that there will be 6x faster autofocus in low light.
Excitingly, the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max will both be able to use the new Apple ProRAW photo file format when it launches later this year. Users will be able to shoot RAW photo files while simultaneously using the computational photography features such as Smart HDR 3 and Deep Fusion.
Specs
The iPhone 12 Pro is 5G-ready, which means you’ll be able to connect to next-gen internet networks from your iPhone for the very first time.
All phones in the iPhone 12 range make use of the A14 Bionic chipset. Apple claims it’s the fastest chip ever in a smartphone, and a full 40% more powerful than the A13 chipset in the iPhone 11 range. You’ll also get to use the new iOS 14 operating system, and you’ll have storage options of 64GB, 256GB and 651GB.
As for battery life, Apple claims the iPhone 12 Pro will last for up to 17 hours of video playback.
